ST. CLOUD — Thousands greeted former President Donald Trump with a standing ovation long before he stepped onstage for a campaign rally at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud on Saturday night, July 27.

Trump waved to the crowd in front of a sign that said, “Minnesota is Trump Country.”

“Last night I spoke to a great group of people, Christians,” Trump said. “Then I talked about crypto. I went from Christians to Bitcoin and now I’m with you.”

A massive crowd — some of whom waited in line since Friday — braved 90-degree weather Saturday to see Republican nominee Trump and his vice presidential running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.

In the middle of his speech, Trump made a point to show how many people were inside and outside of the rally, playing live footage of supporters standing in front of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

“[The media] never show the crowd,” Trump said. “They never say a lot of people come.” The hockey rink erupted in applause. Attendees held up their signs, clapped and cheered.

Trump’s top priority of the night was to critique his presumptive Democratic opponent: Vice President Kamala Harris. He specifically criticized her stances on the border, abortion and law enforcement.

“Kamala Harris was a failed VP,” Trump said. “A horrible district attorney. She destroyed San Francisco. If a crazy liberal like Kamala Harris gets in the American dream is dead.”

As part of the Biden administration, Trump claimed Harris failed as border czar, in part, because she never visited the border, he said.

“No one has been more of an open borders zealot than Harris,” Trump said.

Trump claimed that Harris allowed 20 million undocumented people to enter the country. Earlier in the evening, Vance claimed it had been 10 million.

“I have a very simple message to millions of illegal aliens in this country: If you're here, start packing your bags right now because Donald J. Trump is going to be the next president,” Vance said.

Trump would also finish building the border wall, Vance said.

Several current and former presidents and vice presidents have visited St. Cloud for more than 70 years. That includes Eisenhower, Clinton and both George Bushes.

“In six months, we’re going to launch the largest deportation program in the history of this country,” Vance said. “We’re going to end catch and release, we’re going to ban sanctuary cities.”

The Biden administration is responsible for an increase in what Trump calls migrant crime, the former president claimed.

Additionally, the former president made claims that Harris worked to defund Medicare and Social Security during her time in office — and is looking to "defund the police."

“She keeps saying defund the police,” Trump said. “Politicians don’t change. What they say first, that’s what they are.”

Later, Trump said he planned to increase funding to police and other law enforcement agencies.

“I love the police,” Trump said. “We’re not de-funding them. We want to overfund the police. We’re going to make America great again.”

Vance also said that Harris wants to abolish ICE, protect squatters, keep police off the streets and support extreme environmental policies.

He also said Harris want more criminals on the street, referencing a claim that Harris had donated to the bail funds of protesters during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests that erupted across the country after the murder of George Floyd by former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin.

“If we have an honest election I think we’re going to blow it out in Minnesota,” Trump said. “We’re not going to allow them to rig the election in 2024 like they did in 2020.”

Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minnesota, took the stage earlier on Saturday to endorse Trump and Vance, saying the July 13 assassination attempt only made the Republican Party stronger. He was met with cheers when he called to turn Minnesota red for the first time in half a century.

Then, he turned his attention to Harris.

“Make no secret the Biden/Harris administration has caused havoc across our great state,” said Emmer, who represents Minnesota’s 6th District, including St. Cloud.

Emmer also addressed speculation that Harris might pick Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a running mate, calling him “an empty suit who should not be allowed anywhere near the White House.”

Vance spoke earlier in the evening, wasting no time in taking shots at President Joe Biden, calling him one of the worst presidents in American history. The crowd in St. Cloud responded by chanting, “USA! USA! USA!”

Trump proved he was more equipped for the job than Biden during their June debate, Vance said. Vance claimed the media has covered up Biden’s incompetence for nearly four years.

“They told us that Joe Biden was Abraham Lincoln, and now they’re saying Kamala Harris is Martin Luther King Jr.,” Vance said. “She is a card-carrying member of her San Francisco lunatic friends. America isn’t going to be fooled by the media's lies anymore.”

That rally was outdoors at Pennsylvania's Butler Farm Show, which is a roughly 100-acre fairground used for agricultural exhibitions. The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, and indoor facility, has 6,000 seats but can fit 8,000 people, according to St. Cloud State officials.

The Secret Service has recommended that Trump according to media reports.

On Tuesday, July 23, Secret Service director Kimberly Cheattle announced her resignation in the wake of the assassination attempt.

Minnesota has become an unexpected focal point in the presidential race. Gov. Walz has been rumored to be on the shortlist of Harris vice presidential contenders.

Republicans — including Emmer, Republican House majority whip — believe that reliably blue Minnesota can be flipped to the GOP this year. Then-incumbent Trump and Vice President Mike Pence lost Minnesota in 2020 to Biden-Harris by about 233,000 votes.
