ST. CLOUD — Security was tight to get into Donald Trump and J.D. Vance's Republican presidential campaign rally on Saturday, July 27, outside the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on the campus of St. Cloud State.

However, people coming through the line seemed grateful for it.

Doors opened a little before 3 p.m. to begin letting the capacity crowd in. The line to get in stretched back up Fourth Avenue South almost to the intersection of Clearwater Road.

Each attendee had to go through a metal detector and some security personnel also used metal-detecting wands on those coming into the hockey arena that can hold 8,000 people.

Chad and Tanya Strom of Sartell stood in line for six-plus hours to get into the rally. The initially got in line near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Avenue South. The Stroms parked in an apartment complex parking lot and walked to get in line.

"I've never waited in line for something this long," said Strom, a U.S. Army veteran. "I'm in the military and I've waited in line all my life. But this definitely takes the cake and it was worth it."

When the Stroms arrived at the security checkpoint to get into the arena they had to take everything out of their pockets, but everything else was pretty standard.

"Security was easy to get in and out of," Strom said. "It was kind of like going through TSA at the airport. I wasn't really worried about the security because it was inside. That really made a difference for me (in wanting to come)."

The rally comes two weeks after an assassination attempt against the Republican nominee for president at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump's ear was struck by a bullet, and one spectator was killed and two others injured at the outdoor event, according to media reports. The suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement.

The U.S. Secret Service has recommended that Trump such as Saturday's rally in St. Cloud.

However, Trump earlier on Saturday said he would continue to hold outdoor rallies, despite the security concerns, Reuters reported. The former president also said he would return to Butler, Pennsylvania, for another rally, but did not offer any details, Reuters reported.

The Secret Service managed security at the hockey center and the Stearns County Sheriff's Department, Minnesota State Patrol and the St. Cloud Police Department were also on hand to assist. There were also local volunteers who helped at the entrances to the floor of the arena.

Strom retired from the Army last October after 31 years of service. He did tours in Kuwait and Iraq. Standing in line to see Trump and Vance speak is something he won't forget anytime soon.

"I honestly believe they can turn the United States around. (Trump) could've quit a long time ago. With everybody coming at him, I'm surprised he's still kicking," Strom said. "A couple of weeks ago he was shot. I'm glad he's here two weeks later after that. I'm glad I'm here to support him."
