MILWAUKEE — Several vehicles in a motorcade carrying Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz were involved in a crash Monday afternoon, resulting in multiple injuries.

While traveling between Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport to a scheduled appearance in the city’s downtown, several vehicles carrying various staff members and reporters crashed.

Walz was not injured in the crash, and his vehicle carried on to his scheduled speaking event.

“We were violently thrown forward as our van slammed into the one in front of us and was hit from behind,” said New York Times reporter Jazmine Ulloa.

According to pool reporters, at least one person suffered a broken arm and was treated by paramedics. Multiple reporters and staff members sustained concussions, bloody noses, scrapes and bruises.

Only one person was transported to a hospital, pool reporters said, with the other 11 occupants continuing to Walz's event after securing a new vehicle.

Those in the impacted vehicles remained on the side of the road for roughly an hour.

Photos from the scene depict dozens of people standing along the shoulder of the Interstate, with ambulances from multiple area agencies tending to any injuries.

According to pool reports, the crash appeared to have been caused by a woman in a BMW who was stopped on a road that should have been cleared for the motorcade. Police, however, have not yet confirmed that report.

During a scheduled appearance at a union event, Walz addressed the crash near the top of his speech.

"First off, let me say — some you might have heard — some of my staff and members of the press that were traveling up with us were involved in a traffic accident on the way here today," he said. "We’ve spoken with the staff. I'm relieved to say that with a few minor injuries, everybody's going to be okay."

The governor said he'd heard from both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris following the crash.

"President Biden and Vice President Harris called to check in, and we certainly appreciate their concern," he said in his speech, "and I want to express my sincere thanks to the US Secret Service and all the local first responders for their quick reaction to hell.”

Immediately following his speech at Milwaukee's lakefront festival park, Walz traveled to an area hospital, where campaign officials say he checked up on his staff member that was admitted.

Monday's crash came just a few days after a police officer escorting the Harris-Walz campaign motorcade in Savannah, Georgia, crashed on Aug. 28.

In that case, pool reporters said the officer lost control of his motorcycle without striking any other vehicles or objects.
