GRAND FORKS — The National Weather Service put out an alert regarding dense smoke from Canadian wildfires moving through the region on Friday, May 9.

The weather service said a cold front is carrying a narrow band of smoke into the area, severely degrading air quality.

These conditions are forecast at any one location for a relatively brief period of two to five hours Friday morning into the afternoon, it said.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said the smoke is coming from wildfires in eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba that broke out Thursday afternoon.

The smoke is moving southeast across the region and will gradually dissipate.

The MPCA said an air quality alert is not anticipated due to the limited duration of the event.

Still, it recommends people alter their outdoor plans during the period of thickest smoke.

The public may monitor area air quality sensors

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
