Police ID motorcyclist who died after driving into lake in Otter Tail County

The 70-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle on County Highway 4 southwest of Vergas on Friday morning, suffering fatal injuries. Witnesses say the man crossed the center line, entered a ditch, and proceeded to enter Lawrence Lake.

VERGAS, Minn. — The Otter Tail County Sheriff's office has released the named of a motorcyclist who died Friday morning, July 29, after driving into a lake southwest of Vergas.

A witness saw the motorcycle traveling eastbound on County Highway 4 when it drove over the center line and entered the north ditch, according to a report from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

After entering the ditch, the motorcycle proceeded to enter Lawrence Lake, the report said.

The witness immediately removed the motorcyclist, George Hough of Elbow Lake, from the water, then called 911.

Hough, 70, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It is possible that he suffered a medical emergency prior to the incident, the report said.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash. Vergas is about 14 miles south of Detroit Lakes.
