Motorcyclist killed in east-central Minn. crash

FOLEY, Minn. — A motorcyclist died Sunday, June 4, after a crash with a pickup truck in Benton County.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of 165th Avenue Northeast and 65th Street Northeast in Maywood Township near Foley, according to a Benton County Sheriff’s Office news release.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Ricky Lee Karsch, 57, of Rice, was driving a 2003 Yamaha XVS1100 motorcycle westbound on 65th Street Northeast, approaching the intersection with 165th Avenue Northeast.

Ryan Michael Renstrom Jr., 20, of Maple Grove, was driving a 2021 Ram 1500 pickup southbound on 165th Avenue Northeast, according to the news release. Renstrom, who was also pulling a boat on a trailer, stopped for the stop sign at 65th Street Northeast.

RECENT CRASHES AROUND THE AREA:

The Sheriff’s Office said Renstrom failed to yield the right of way to Karsch by proceeding southbound into the intersection in front of Karsch. A witness indicated that Karsch attempted to avoid the crash, but collided with the driver’s door area of Renstrom’s truck.

Responding deputies arrived and found Karsch unresponsive with life-threatening injuries, according to the release. Deputies and bystanders provided first aid to Karsch, who was then flown from the scene by North Memorial Air Care to a hospital.

Karsch died at the hospital as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, according to the release.

Renstrom suffered minor injuries. Two adult passengers in Renstrom’s truck did not report any injuries.

All occupants of Renstrom’s truck were believed to be wearing seat belts, and no indication of impairment was observed by deputies investigating the crash, the release said.
