Summer reading takes on local twist as Minnesota authors share their stories throughout the state

All across Minnesota this summer, authors are being invited to speak at libraries, community centers and conferences. Many authors are either Minnesotans themselves or have connections to the state.

The Friends of the Willmar Public Library hosted its annual Wisdom and Wine event on June 13, 2024. Attendees had the opportunity to purchase books written by the invited authors and then get the books signed at the end of the evening.

Throughout the summer, Minnesota communities will recognize the work and dedication it takes to become a published author. From libraries to conference centers, authors with Minnesota connections have been invited to speak and share their stories. Here's a roundup of some of those events from around the state:

Dr. Xiao Jing "Iris" Wang's first book, "Boo Can't Poo," teaches kids how to deal with constipation by following the story of a little ghost.

Minnesota authors Jess Lourey, J. Ryan Stradal and Cary Griffith headlined the annual fundraiser, which raises money for the Willmar Library.


Retired newspaperman Dave Greschner's first book captures the remarkable detail of northern Wisconsin's seasons.

A Macalester College history prof partnered with a New York-based illustrator to create "The Graphic History of Hip Hop."

Denise Lajimodiere will read from her children's book, "Josie Dances," at the Fargo Public Library on Monday as part of North Dakota Center for the Book’s "Great Reads from Great Places."

In separate chapters, the book covers invasive mussels, tiny invertebrates, snails, Great Lakes fish, Asian carp, snakeheads, crayfish and invasive plants and algae.

Minnesota author William Kent Krueger spoke in Hackensack Wednesday, June 12, about literacy and the power of books.
