At about 1:45 p.m. Sunday, a 911 caller reported finding a burning outbuilding and a man who was on fire near the outbuilding, according to the release. The 911 caller unsuccessfully tried to extinguish the fire burning on the man before calling 911.

When deputies arrived, they attempted to provide first aid to the man, but he was declared dead at the scene, according to the release.

The Sauk Rapids Fire Department extinguished the fire in the outbuilding and uncontrolled fires in two outdoor wood-burning stoves.

The Sauk Rapids Fire Department and Benton County Sheriff’s Office have enlisted the assistance of the State Fire Marshall in the investigation of the circumstances surrounding this fire and death, according to the release. The investigation is ongoing.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
