NEW YORK MILLS, Minn. — The Otter Tail County Historical Society plans to hold a downtown walking tour at 5:15 p.m. Friday, June 9, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Great American Think-Off debate.

During the tour, people will hear about the community's history, from communists to county division to pickles and the Cornbread Mafia, according to a press release from the Otter Tail County Historical Society.

Admission is $8, with proceeds going to the county historical society. Those interested are asked to meet in front of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center at 24 N. Main Ave.

Otter Tail County commissioners held their first meeting in 1868, in a forest of white pine, red and white oak, tamarack and ash. Soon, investors from New York established the New York Mills Company, a lumber mill. Materials arrived in 1872 on the first rail car and the mill operated in the area that is now known as Central Park.

The Great American Think-Off debate will be held at the New York Mills ÍáÍáÂþ» Auditorium at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 10. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, or $5 for students

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
