BROOKLYN PARK — An overnight break-in took place Wednesday at the home of Rep. Melissa Hortman, just days after the lawmaker and her husband were fatally shot at the residence , according to the Brooklyn Park Police Department.

Police responded to a call of a possible break-in at roughly 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 18. When they arrived, they discovered plywood covering a rear window had been pried off and the window was smashed.

The break-in doesn't affect the homicide investigation, a representative of the police department said Wednesday.

“There is no impact to the homicide case itself,” Brooklyn Park Police Department North Precinct Commander Matt Rabe told Forum News Service. “It’s just a really horrible circumstance and thing for the family to have to deal with again.”

The home appeared to have been searched by the unknown individual, although family members reported to law enforcement that no items appeared to be missing.

The home had been previously processed by crime scene investigators and boarded up, but is being processed again following the break-in, authorities said.

Hortman, a leader within the Democratic party, and her husband, Mark, were slain in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday in what authorities have referred to as a politically-motivated assassination. Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot in a connected attack earlier Saturday, but both survived.

Vance Boelter, a Minnesota resident, is facing federal homicide charges related to their deaths.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department is treating the incident as a burglary. Any information should be reported by calling 763-493-8222.
