Bond or bail was set at $500,000 with no conditions and $350,000 with conditions. As of Thursday morning, Mendez Macias was still housed in the Crow Wing County Jail.
His next court appearance is scheduled for May 14 in Crow Wing County District Court.
On Tuesday, April 16, a woman reported to be the victim of a sexual assault at a Brainerd-area hotel where she was staying. The woman said she borrowed a cellphone charger from Mendez Macias, who was an employee at the hotel.
The victim told officers she and Mendez Macias consumed some alcohol and smoked marijuana together, and she believed she was given an unknown drug by Mendez Macias or was made intoxicated beyond the point of retaining full memory.
The woman believed she may have been sexually assaulted and was brought to the Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where a criminal sexual conduct exam was conducted.
While at the hospital, she told officers that sometime in the night she woke up in an unknown hotel bed and two male suspects were sexually assaulting her. She told officers she felt like she had no control over her body and that she was in a daze. At some point after the assault, she recalled going back to her room with the assistance of someone working at the front desk of the hotel.
When officers reviewed video surveillance at the hotel, an employee, later identified as Mendez Macias, was observed going into the victim’s room multiple times during the evening of Monday, April 15. On at least one occasion, Mendez Macias used a device to open the door and gain access to the room. At one point, he was in her room for about 30 minutes.

The video also showed the victim leaving the room for a significant period; she appeared severely impaired, having difficulty walking and turning around several times.
While at the hospital, the woman was shown a photo of Mendez Macias, and she confirmed he was the person she first met at the hotel and one of the suspects who was involved in sexually assaulting her.
Officers learned Mendez Macias lives and works at the hotel. While officers were talking with Mendez Macias, he told them he met the woman that evening and was helping her after she was dropped off at the hotel because she missed her bus.
Mendez Macias told officers on three occasions Monday evening — though the video shows four — he went to the woman's room to assist her in charging her cellphone, loaning her his charger.
He told officers the woman was drinking vodka and he had five 16-ounce cans of Bud Light. Mendez Macias stated nothing else occurred between them.
Officers informed Mendez Macias the woman was having DNA samples collected at the hospital and asked if anything else happened that he had not previously disclosed. Mendez Macias then admitted he had not been truthful and that he had sexual intercourse with the woman Monday evening in her room.
Mendez Macias said she appeared intoxicated but consented to having sexual intercourse with him. He said he left her room after having sex with her and went back to his room. He denied any other male suspect being involved.
