Boy fatally struck by Minnesota Metro Transit bus in Brooklyn Park

The boy, who has not been identified, was reportedly standing in the roadway at the time of the accident

ST. PAUL — A Metro Transit bus struck and killed a child Wednesday morning, Jan. 31 in Brooklyn Park.

The child — a boy, according to Brooklyn Park police — was struck shortly before 6 a.m. on northbound County Road 81 south of 71st Avenue. Police said the boy was apparently standing in the highway when he was struck. His age wasn’t immediately reported by Metro Transit or Brooklyn Park police.

Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at 6:13 a.m., according to Metro Transit.

No passengers were on the bus at the time and the driver will undergo drug and alcohol testing and be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, Metro Transit said.

The Metro Transit Police Department reconstruction team will lead the investigation, with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victim’s identity.
