"The 1948 Great Northern Railway caboose, a true relic of the past, stands as a living testament to the region's railroading heritage," a release said. "Known for its distinctive cupola design, this piece of rolling history provides a unique glimpse into the golden age of American rail travel."

At its time of manufacture, the 30-foot steel caboose was essential to the safe operation of freight trains, providing a vantage point for crew members to observe the train.

The caboose will be preserved and made safe for visitors, who will have the opportunity to step onto the caboose and back in time to experience the sights and sounds of a bygone era in railroading, the release said.

"We are excited to share this piece of history with the community," said Emily Thabes, executive director of the Historical Society. "The caboose will serve as a dynamic educational tool, allowing visitors to connect with the past and gain a deeper understanding of the role that railroads played in shaping the landscape of Beltrami County."
