BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society is fundraising to cover the transportation costs of a historic 1948 Great Northern Railway caboose that will be permanently displayed at the History Center.

"The 1948 Great Northern Railway caboose, a true relic of the past, stands as a living testament to the region's railroading heritage," a release said. "Known for its distinctive cupola design, this piece of rolling history provides a unique glimpse into the golden age of American rail travel."

At its time of manufacture, the 30-foot steel caboose was essential to the safe operation of freight trains, providing a vantage point for crew members to observe the train.

Once transported to the History Center, the caboose will be preserved and made safe for visitors, who will have the opportunity to step onto the caboose and back in time to experience the sights and sounds of a bygone era in railroading, the release said.

The Northern Iron Horse Model Railroad Society, which makes and maintains railroad models at the depot, brought the project to the Historical Society and will support the move and maintenance projects.

"We are excited to share this piece of history with the community," said Emily Thabes, executive director of the Historical Society, in the release. "The caboose will serve as a dynamic educational tool, allowing visitors to connect with the past and gain a deeper understanding of the role that railroads played in shaping the landscape of Beltrami County."

After donations from Reierson Construction and other local companies, the cost to transport and preserve the caboose is between $10,000 and $20,000, the release said. To help cover these costs, the Historical Society has launched a fundraising campaign. Donations will be accepted now through Thursday, Dec. 28. During this period, all donations up to $5,000 will be matched by an anonymous donor.

Donations may be made in person at the History Center or online at
