"When you know, you know," is a phrase I have used the past few weeks when talking about the timing of my retirement. Recently, there has been a change in the things that matter the most to me. The softness of the bathroom mat under my bare feet in the morning has become more important than the daily outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. It has become harder to drag myself away from the birdsong in the backyard to get dressed for work.
A few years ago, the thought of retirement sounded nice, but there was a fear of the grand ennui. I no longer fear the grand ennui. There are many things in my life I want to do but work leaves me without enough time to do them. I completely understand what people mean when they say they want to spend more time with their wife and family and friends. My career with WDAY and The Forum has been a fortunate opportunity and a privilege, but it is time now to retire.
