ST. PAUL — Unseeded Maple Grove was all set to head into the final period tied with No. 1 Minnetonka before a defensive zone breakdown allowed Ms. Hockey finalist Lindzi Avar to snipe a shot into the top corner with 0.9 seconds left on the clock.

With Avar wide open in front, Kendra Distad won a board battle to set up the Cornell commit for the eventual game-winning goal.

That was all Minnetonka needed in a 2-1 quarterfinal victory Thursday night at Xcel Energy Center.

A late Maple Grove power play and waved off insurance goal for Minnetonka made it tight, but the Skippers held on in the final stanza.

Minnetonka will play Edina, who beat Northfield 5-0, at 8 p.m. Friday

Andover 6, Rosemount 0

Andover went a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play in its Class AA quarterfinal victory over Rosemount on Thursday.

The Huskies also scored four even-strength goals, which included two tallies from birthday girl Maya Engler, who turned 17-years-old on the day of the 6-0 state tournament win over the Irish.

"It was really cool to score on my birthday, it put a smile on my face," Engler said.

Rosemount did not record a shot on goal in the third period of play in the quarterfinal loss.

No. 3 seed Andover will now play No. 2 Hill-Murray in the Class AA semifinals, while Rosemount will play Roseau in the consolation bracket.

Edina 5, Northfield 0

The final Class AA girls quarterfinal of the day at the Xcel Energy Center was dominanted by No. 4 seed Edina. The Hornets took a 5-0 shutout victory over No. 5 seed Northfield, which had previously only lost one game during the 2023-24 season.

Edina outshot Northfield by a 35-8 overall margin. Nora Hannan earned the shutout in net for the Hornets while forwards Hannah Halverson and Whitney Horton both had multi-point efforts.

Northfield will now move into the consolation bracket while Edina will play No. 1 seed Minnetonka in the semifinals on Friday.

The Hornets opened scoring early in the second period. Hannah Halverson's shot from the circle trickled through the five-hole of netminder Macy Mueller and then Whitney Horton pushed the dribbling puck into the back of the net. Halverson then scored a goal of her own less than 10 minutes later to double the lead for the Hornets off of a shot from the slot.

Edina then exploded for three goals in the final period of play.

Hill-Murray 8, Roseau 2

Chloe Boreen, the Hill-Murray captain and St. Thomas commit, extended her point streak to 16 games with two unassisted goals, including a highlight-reel breakaway tally in the second period, in an 8-2 win over Roseau in the first Class AA quarterfinal.

Her standout goal came with 34 seconds left in the second period, when she buried a backhander after blocking a shot at the point to create her own breakaway.

The Ms. Hockey semifinalist was one of three players for the second-seeded Pioneers, along with Jaycee Chatleain and Elliana Engelhardt, with two goals in the game. It was the first state tournament game for Hill-Murray since 2020, with Boreen the only remaining player from that team.
