Lumberjacks showcase prowess at Brainerd's Paul Bunyan invite, Athena Invitational

The Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ girls wrestling team impressed in a pair of tournaments over the weekend.

The Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ girls wrestling team competed in a pair of tournaments over the weekend, first in the Paul Bunyan Invite in Brainerd on Friday and then the Hopkins Athena Invitational on Saturday.

BHS shined at the tournaments, as a host of Lumberjacks came away with first-place finishes and top-five placements at both events.

Paul Bunyan Invite

Seven wrestlers finish atop their respective weight classes at the Paul Bunyan Invite on Friday.

Tahliya Little grabbed first in the 115-119 weight class, beating Brainerd’s Arianna Elling-Starry by fall in 5:51.

At 138-142, Jadyn Eichberg captured first by winning a 9-5 decision in the first round and pinning both her opponents in 1:03 or less in the next two rounds.

Natasha Severson also took home a first-place finish, winning all three rounds by fall at 149-157.

Makaya Gotchie snagged first by a trio of falls as well, finishing atop the 161-174 weight class.

Maya Schmidt dominated at 163-178, winning all three rounds by fall in 31 seconds or less to finish first. Keeari Goodfellow also impressed at 205-229, pinning all her opponents in 1:25 or less.

Kiera Hagman-Nyagaka captured first place at 125-129, winning by fall over Maggie Bernu of Brainerd in 4:24.

Beyond those six first-place finishes, the Lumberjacks also had a host of wrestlers tally top-three placements.

Braelyn Ruport secured fall victories in the first and second rounds at 142-153 to earn second in the weight class.

Emma Richards earned second place at 97-100, winning by fall in 1:10 over Willow Albrecht in the third round to secure her placement.

Dezerai Puffe placed third at 124-134, pinning Kali Mulroy of Brainerd in 3:50 in round two.

Annabelle Wuori nabbed third at 131-137, beating Grand Rapids’ Kenzi Miranda by 8-4 decision in the first round. Imrie Mistic also placed third, besting Brainerd’s Avery Horsman by fall in two minutes at 136-142.

Patricia Tooker won her second-round matchup against Brainerd’s Ruthie Hagen by fall in 2:16 to place third at 141-146.

At 142-148, Chasity Skerik bested Brainerd’s Elise Larson by fall in 2:46 in round one to notch third.

Hopkins Athena Invitational

Bemidij put together an impressive performance at the Hopkins Athena Invitational as well on Saturday, placing fourth with a team score of 77.

In the 118B weight class, Little earned a 3-0 record and took first place with a 12-5 decision over Ellie Levine of Hastings.

Severson (4-1) won first in the 148B class by defeating Elk River’s Xarissa Newman by fall in 3:36.

The Lumberjacks took home another first place in 170A, as Gotchie (4-0) bested Eagan’s Taniah Borney by fall in 2:53.

Bemidji had a pair of wrestlers place in the 235B weight class. Goodfellow (3-0) took home first with a 24-second fall over Sasha Olson of Coon Rapids, while McKenzie Ghinter placed fourth after falling to Chleo Welp of Apple Valley in the third-place match.

Taylor Merschman finished with a 5-2 record and placed fifth at 106A, defeating Jada Jensen of Bloomington Kennedy by technical fall in 4:41.

Amber Kremper (5-2) won the consolation championship match in the 118B weight class against Cecilia Tregaski of St. Michael-Albertville by a 14-12 decision.

At 136C, Wuori (2-4) took a 16-5 major decision win over Sarah Perez Cardoa of Scott West for fifth place.

Mistic (5-3) placed fifth at 142A, , besting Alondra Lopez of Monticello with a 12-9 decision.

Skerik (5-2) won the consolation championship match at 148A, pinning Gay (Joy) Par Pyo of St. Paul Como Park in 2:41.

Maya Schmidt placed sixth in the 190A weight class.
