Jacks’ fast start leads to 1st-round win over St. Cloud in Granite City Showcase

The Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ boys hockey team was eager to get a first-round win in the Granite City Showcase on Thursday at the MAC in St. Cloud.

ST. CLOUD – The Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ boys hockey team was eager to get a first-round win in the Granite City Showcase on Thursday at the MAC in St. Cloud.

The Lumberjacks beat the host school 6-2 behind three-goal first and second periods.

Briggs Knott, Dom Arndt and Cal Mattfield each scored in the opening frame. Knott and Mattfield scored power-play goals. Joey Fankhanel, Noah Mannausau, Connor Stodgell, Benji O’Leary and Taevon Welle each had assists to build the 3-0 lead.

After a pair of helpers in the first period, Mannausau made it 4-0 in the second. Knott added his second goal before Fankhanel made it 6-0.

St. Cloud scored twice on the power play in the third period to snub BHS goaltender Tate Metcalf of a shutout. Metcalf stopped 18 shots on goal in the win. Nathan Gohman and Nolan Lund combined for 23 saves for the Crush.
