ST. PAUL — Edina's underclassmen combined for nine points and five goals in a 6-2 win over the Elks in a Class AA quarterfinal game Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Sophomore center Casey Vandertop scored a second-period hat trick as part of a five-goal middle frame for the Hornets (24-4-1).

Elk River (18-10-1) was smothered by the No. 1 seed in Class AA for most of the night, with the Hornets capitalizing time after time on turnovers and plays to the middle of the offensive zone.

The Elks were able to mostly keep Edina's vaunted top line of Mr. Hockey finalist and Minnesota commit Jackson Nevers, St. Thomas commit Bobby Cowan and Mason West off the scoresheet. The trio combined for three points.

Grand Rapids 2, White Bear Lake 1

Nathan Garski scored a power-play goal with 1.6 seconds remaining as Grand Rapids beat White Bear Lake 2-1 in the Minnesota Class AA quarterfinals Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

White Bear Lake's Jack Stanius scored at the 15:26 mark of the third to tie the game. With seconds ticking down, Grand Rapids gained control of the puck, setting up Garski's heroics. He corraled a pass out front and buried the puck just inside the post, just out of the reach of goaltender Leo Gabriel's outstretched left pad. The game clock read 0.2 seconds before some time was added before the center-ice faceoff following the goal.

"I didn't really think, to be honest," Garski said in a postgame TV interview about making an extra move as time was expiring. "I just made a move and it worked out. But it wasn't really planned."

William Shermoen scored at the 4:04 mark of the first period to put Grand Rapids on the board.

Sophomore forward Max Anderson netted Cretin-Derham Hall's game-winning goal in double overtime to propel the Raiders to a 4-3 victory over Centennial in the Class AA quarterfinals on Thursday.

"I kind of blacked out on that one," joked Anderson after the win. "Once my buddy Nate Chorlton fed me that one I knew it was going in."

Centennial led 3-0 but the Raiders tied the game at 3-3 on an Anderson goal in the third period.

Cretin-Derham Hall goaltender Owen Nelson made 29 saves in the win while Centennial's Easton Cody made a whopping 46 stops in the loss.

Chanhassen 7, Century/John Marshall 0

It took the No. 5-ranked team in the state, four Division I commits and a Senior Goalie of the Year finalist to do what hasn’t been done in more than a month: beat the Century/John Marshall boys hockey team.

Chanhassen, the No. 2-seeded team in the Class 2A boys hockey state tournament, received goals from three of those four Division I commits and 12 saves from one of the state’s best goalies, Kam Hendrickson, as it pulled away for a 7-0 win against Century/JM in the first state quarterfinal game of the day Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Seven different Chanhassen players scored goals as the Storm outshot the Panthers 42-12.

The unseeded Panthers saw their seven-game unbeaten streak, which dated back to Feb. 3, come to an end, though they were within a goal of the Storm until midway through the second period before Chahassen put the game out of reach.
