Bemidji’s Gabe Morin, Nick Strand still alive for state title contention after Day 1

Two Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ boys wrestlers can still win individual state championships. Gabe Morin and Nick Strand went undefeated on the first day of the Class 3A individual state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL – Two Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ boys wrestlers can still win individual state championships.

Gabe Morin and Nick Strand went undefeated on the first day of the Class 3A individual state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Wrestling at 127 pounds, Morin beat Farmington’s Blake Han-Lindmyer in a 4-0 decision, then won in a sudden victory over St. Michael-Albertville’s Brody Bergeron to finish 2-0.

Strand, wrestling at 139, beat Farmington’s Timothy Mangowi in a 9-0 major decision before notching a 2-1 win by ultimate tiebreaker over Eden Prairie’s Zytavius Williams.

Four other Lumberjacks competed on Friday.

In a rematch of their consolation championship match at 107 pounds in the team tournament, Ozzie Hanks beat Prior Lake’s Rocco Mikolzyk in a 7-5 decision. He then lost by technical fall to Shakopee’s Ethan Phanmanivong. Hanks finished the day by notching a technical fall win over Wayzata’s Peter Schutz. Hanks will wrestle in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.

Nehemiah Schwinghammer will join Hanks. After dropping his first-round match, Schwinghammer beat Jacob Henderson of Cambridge-Isanti in a 7-1 decision.

Two of the Jacks’ seasons ended. After winning his first round match, a pin in 5:40 over Jacob Long of Chaska/Chanhassen – Gavin Osborn lost his next two matches at 133 pounds. Alec Newby dropped his first-round bout against Nick Korman of Albert Lea in a 4-3 decision. Korman took Newby’s spot in the wrestlebacks.

The four remaining, along with Taylor Merchman (100 pounds) and Maya Schmidt (179), will conclude the state tournament on Saturday.
