WILLMAR – The Bemidji High ÍáÍáÂþ»­ boys wrestling team just can’t seem to get past Willmar in the Section 8-3A championship.

The Lumberjacks, after a 35-21 semifinal win over Brainerd, took on the Cardinals with the section crown on the line for the seventh consecutive year. But as it had in the last three seasons, Willmar got its way once again.

Hosting BHS on their home mat, the Cardinals defeated the Jacks 31-18, ensuring a fourth straight trip to state and a fourth year in a row of heartbreak for Bemidji.

The dual started out well enough for the Lumberjacks, with BHS compiling the first three match wins. Oscar Hanks earned a decision win at 107, as did Casey Sisneros at 114 and Gabe Morin at 121.

Down 9-0, Willmar started to fight back. Ivan Mares earned a decision win over Gavin Osborn at 127, then Cavin Carlson earned a bonus point with a major decision win over Brody Castonguay at 133.

Conlan Carlson gave the Cardinals their first lead with a pin of Lincoln Schmitt at 139. Sulley Anez extended Willmar’s advantage to 16-9 with a decision victory against Nick Strand at 145.

Alec Newby responded with a decision win at 152, cutting Bemidji’s deficit to 16-12. But the Jacks would not score again until the heavyweight match. The Cardinals won four consecutive matches, clinching the overall bout and a berth to the state tournament with Ramero Trevino’s pin of Joe Frenzel at 215.

Parker Orvik closed out the dual with a pin of Willmar’s Finley Donelan in the heavyweight matchup.
