Northome-Kelliher, Cass Lake-Bena girls to play in Pacesetter Sweet 16

The Northome-Kelliher and Cass Lake-Bena girls team will play Aug. 3-4 at Clemens Field House at Saint Benedict's in St. Joseph in the 35th Annual Pacesetter Sweet 16 Championships

BEMIDJI — The Northome-Kelliher and Cass Lake-Bena varsity girls teams will play on Aug. 3-4 at Clemens Field House at Saint Benedict's in St. Joseph in the 35th Annual Pacesetter Sweet 16 Championships, which will again feature the top-ranked Minnesota high school boys and girls basketball teams in each class.

Five high school state champions that were crowned in March and three runner-up teams will battle the field to try to claim the two overall championships.

Cherry, the Class A boys state champion, Breck, the Class AA state champion and Totino Grace, the Class AAA champion, will be joined by Wayzata, Class AAA runner-up, Mankato East, Class AAA runner-up, and three 2024 state tournament teams — Alexandria, Orono and Albany. Perennial power Hopkins joins the powerhouse lineup of boys teams.

The girl's lineup of teams will feature Class AAAA state champion Minnetonka, three-time Class AA champion Providence Academy and the Class AAAA runner-up and Hopkins, along with Eden Prairie, St. Michael-Albertville and other top teams in a 12-team bracket. The tournament will feature three final four divisions on Sunday.

Pacesetter director Jeff McCarron referred to the Sweet 16 as “The greatest gathering of Minnesota talent under one roof all year.”
