Weekly Fishing Report: Area fishing is improving, kids fishing tourney on the horizon

Fishing in the Bemidji area has been good this past week, and area fishing is getting better.

Fishing in the Bemidji area has been good this past week.

Walleye are being caught on Lake Bemidji, Plantanganet, Grace, Cass and Andrusia on jigs and minnows, live bait rigs on minnows, crawlers and leeches. Slip bobbers are also working well in 10 to 16 feet.

Bass fishing remains excellent using plastics in shallow and the deeper weed edges. You’ll find crappies off the deeper weed edges and bluegills are still up shallow. Pike are hitting about anything you throw at them.

And area fishing is getting better.

Bemidji area: Jigs and minnows continue to produce walleyes in 8 to 12 feet on Lake Bemidji, Lake Plantagenet, Andrusia, Cass and Grace Lake. Bass fishing has been good with plastics in less than 5 feet on local lakes. You’ll find crappies relating to emerging cabbage and bluegills in shallow water on most lakes.

Blackduck area: You’ll find crappies and sunfish in the reeds, around docks or on the bars that have weeds in 4 to 8 feet at Gilstead Lake, Gull Lake, Pimushe Lake, Blackduck Lake, South Twin Lake and North Twin Lake. Walleye are hitting leeches and crawlers at Blackduck, Island Lake and Gull in 10 to 12 feet, while pike and bass are an easy find on most lakes in less than 12 feet.

Cass Lake area: Walleye are hitting a jig and shiner or slip bobber/crawler combination early each day in 9 to 12 feet on Cass Lake, Lake Andrusia and Wolf Lake. Troll crankbaits at night in 10 to 12 feet on Cass and Andrusia for walleye as well. Perch are hitting minnows or crawler pieces in 9 to 12 feet during the day on Pike Bay Lake, Cass, Wolf and Andrusia. Crappies and bluegills are being found in less than 6 feet on Kitchi Lake, Allen’s Bay on Cass and Pike Bay.

Upper Red Lake: Walleye action continues to be very good, and they’re being caught on a jig and minnow, jig and plastic, crankbaits, a slip bobber and leech or spinner rigs with live bait. The east and north shores have been best in 6 feet most days. The bulrushes and north shoreline are giving up crappies in less than 4 feet.

Lake Winnibigoshish: A jig and minnow or slip bobber and leech are producing walleyes on the main-lake bars, shoreline breaks and points in 12 to 15 feet. A vertically-presented jig and minnow is also turning walleye from Little Muskie Bar to Big Bend in 30 to 35 feet. Hit Sugar Point in 10 to 15 feet and Tamarack Bay in 5 to 10 feet for perch.

Leech Lake: Anglers are finding big pods of walleye on the main-lake reefs in 13 to 20 feet and most are being caught with a live-bait rig and crawler or a jig and piece of crawler. A jig and crawler are also producing walleye in 8 to 12 feet out from Five Mile Point. Look for crappies and largemouth bass in the emerging cabbage and bluegills in the reeds throughout most bays.
