BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Aquatic Invasive Species Program is asking those who live on area lakes, especially Lake Carr and Marquette, for help verifying the presence of zebra mussels.

As lake shore owners take out lifts and docks for the season, Aquatic Invasive Species Lakes Technician Bruce Anspach asks that they look them over for zebra mussels and report findings to Beltrami County ESD.

“Please check your moored equipment, docks, lifts and rafts for zebra mussels,” Anspach said in a release. “It only takes a few minutes and can help in verifying that your lake is free of AIS.”

He also mentioned reporting no findings of zebra mussels is just as important as finding some.

He asks participants to report the address or a general location on the lake, what lake they live on and whether or not they found anything.

“We want to know if you don’t find anything either,” Anspach added. “We would really like participation from Lake Carr and Marquette. We have not seen zebra mussels in those lakes yet, but they are connected to Lake Bemidji (a confirmed infested lake).”

Participants can report their findings to Beltrami County ESD at (218) 333-8281 or email Anspanch at bruce.anspach@co.beltrami.mn.us. Please include the address or a general location on the lake, name of the lake and whether or not anything was found.

Our newsroom sometimes reports stories under the byline "Pioneer Staff Report." This byline is used when reporters rewrite basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as an email or press release that requires little or no reporting.

Other times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
