It’s been two months without sports; how close are Minnesota’s pro teams to a return?

ST. PAUL — It’s been just over two months since the positive test heard ‘round the sports world.

Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert’s positive test for COVID-19 on March 11 triggered a shutdown of all sports throughout the country. But there are signs that we may be inching toward their return.

Despite a fighter testing positive, UFC resumed over the weekend using hundreds of tests to try to ensure the event’s safety. Pro tennis returned in a small event over the weekend in Florida, as well, and the PGA Tour plans to return this month.

While it will be much harder to get team sports up and running again safely, here is a look at where things stand for Minnesota’s teams two months after they shut down.

Twins

Major League Baseball owners and it was presented to the Players Association on Tuesday.

That plan would have teams playing a regional, interleague schedule of around 82 games in their home parks, if possible, beginning in early July. A rebooted Spring Training would begin in June. If home parks are unavailable because of local COVID-related restrictions, spring training sites could be in play.

There would also be a . MLB and the Players Association are likely to have long discussions about player salaries, as well as the safety of players and staff as they work toward a deal to bring the sport back.

Wild

The NHL’s top minor league affiliate officially ended its season on Monday, but the big league still has its sights set on a return this summer, might boost the league’s media footprint.

While the league has , it’s starting to appear more likely that if play resumes at all, it will start with playoffs and in . While the Wild are on the outside looking in right now, a recent discussion reportedly has centered on a 24-team postseason tournament. If that’s the case, the Wild would be included.

Players remain under a self-quarantine recommendation and have expressed a need for a training period. The NHL is reportedly looking at allowing players to return to small group activities at team training facilities later this month.

Timberwolves

After hearing from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday, , with all games possibly being played in one or two spots. Right now, the focus is on Las Vegas and at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Silver has stressed the need for mass testing and asked owners to accept that a positive test would not end play. If the league goes straight into the playoffs, the Timberwolves — 14th in the 15-team Western Conference — would be done.

According to , an informal poll of NBA players revealed “overwhelming” support for resuming play. If the regular season is completed for the playoffs, the start of the 2020-21 season could be pushed back.

United

Minnesota United players were . Among safety protocols, players will be undergoing temperature checks upon arrival. They must arrive in their own vehicle, wear a mask when entering and exiting the facility and were only allowed to go to the parking lot and practice field.

MLS matches have been suspended until at least June 8, and it was reported Tuesday that the l . According to The Athletic, has proposed a plan to .

Lynx

A month ago, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league would start its season, postponed from a scheduled May 15 start, when it is “ In the meantime, the Lynx have started a “virtual training camp” with voluntary workouts, and players have been sent conditioning routines to work on from home.

On Monday, the National Women’s Hockey League named the 2020-21 general managers for the league’s six teams but has not announced any news regarding when or if the 2019-20 season will resume. The Whitecaps, the reigning champs, were set to face the Boston Pride in the Isobel Cup Final when play was shut down. There is no 2019-20 schedule on the .
