MINNEAPOLIS – Despite a trio of power-play goals, the Bemidji State women’s hockey team fell in its first game at the University of Minnesota Showcase on Friday afternoon against Penn State.
The No. 11/12 Nittany Lions erased a two-goal deficit to beat the Beavers 6-4 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Morgan Smith, the reigning WCHA Rookie of the Month, scored the game’s first goal on the power play. Isa Goetll and Geno Hendrickson added two more goals on the power play to give BSU a 3-1 lead early in the second period.
Then PSU kicked its game into gear.
Abby Stonehouse, Leah Stecker, Tessa Janecke and Grace Outwater each scored to put Penn State ahead 5-3. Outwater also scored in the first period.
Izy Fairchild brought BSU within one with three and a half minutes left in regulation. Bemidji State had a power play with its goalie pulled in the final minutes, but Alyssa Machado’s empty-netter sealed the victory for the Nittany Lions with two seconds left.
Eva Filippova and Katie DeSa each stopped 23 shots for Bemidji State (3-16-1) and Penn State (16-4-1), respectively.
