MENDOTA HEIGHTS – Goals have been hard to come by for the Bemidji State women’s hockey team, but they weren’t on Friday night.
The Beavers shut out St. Thomas 5-0 at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. It’s BSU’s third win over the Tommies this season.

The scoring started in the first period. Hailey Armstrong put the Beavers ahead 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining before the intermission.
After a scoreless second period, Izy Fairchild doubled the lead on a penalty shot. Fairchild drew the opportunity 35 seconds into the third frame and scored BSU’s first penalty shot attempt since Feb. 11, 2011. It’s just the second successful penalty shot attempt in program history.
From here, it was all Bemidji State.
Armstrong scored another before junior defenseman Heidi Strompf scored her first career goal into an empty net. Kate Johnson added a fifth with three seconds left in regulation. Talya Hendrickson, Geno Hendrickson, Meredith Killian and Morgan Smith all had one assist.
Eva Filippova stopped 27 shots en route to her second career shutout for the Beavers (6-25-1, 4-21-0 WCHA). Dani Storm made 16 saves for UST (8-21-2, 5-19-1 WCHA).
