Redwood Falls woman dies in Renville County crash

OLIVIA, Minn. — A 59-year-old Redwood Falls woman died in a two-vehicle crash in Renville County around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 about seven miles south of Danube.

Bonita Durbin was pronounced dead at the scene, the Renville County Sheriff's Office reported.

The driver of the other vehicle, Justin Hegreberg, 37, of Spicer, was transported to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Durbin was driving a 2005 Town & Country van northbound on County Road 1 and crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic near 760th Avenue. The van collided with a southbound 2014 Mack semi, driven by Hegreberg, according to the preliminary accident investigation by the Sheriff's Office. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn.

Danube is about 27 miles south of Willmar.

The crash remains under investigation.

Identities released in fatal southern Minnesota crash

DANUBE, Minn. — A Nebraska man and a Minnesota woman were killed when their vehicles collided Sunday morning in Renville County. Four passengers were injured, one critically, according to information from the Renville County Sheriff's Office.

Killed in the crash were Anna M. Jansen, 88, of St. Michael and David R. Swanson, 53, of Lincoln, Neb.

The crash was reported at 11:33 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Renville County Road 1 and Renville County Road 4, which is about eight miles south of Danube in Henryville Township.

According to a news release from the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation indicates that a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Jansen was going west on County Road 4 and failed to stop at the stop sign at County Road 1. The vehicle collided with a 2007 Buick LaCrosse driven by Swanson that was going south on County Road 1.

Both vehicles went into the ditch and overturned.

A passenger in the Buick LaCrosse, Ronda L. Swanson, 53, of Lincoln, Neb., was critically injured and was flown from the scene to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Her condition is not known.

The other three passengers in the Buick were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening. They were: Abigail J. Swanson, 23; Sophia G. Swanson, 19; and Livia L. Swanson, 15, all of Lincoln, Neb.

The crash remains under investigation.

Danube is about 25 miles south of Willmar.

Redwood Falls woman dies from crash injuries

DANUBE, Minn. – One of the persons injured in a two-vehicle accident June 21 in Renville County has died of her injuries.

Madison Vagle, 22, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, according to information that the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office reported to the Renville County Sheriff’s Office.

Vagle had been airlifted from the scene to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale with serious injuries.

The accident occurred at 3:24 p.m. Friday at the intersection of county roads 1 and 4 about eight miles south of Danube. A 2004 International tractor truck and trailer, driven by Mark Wagner, 62, of Bird Island, and a 1996 Subaru Legacy, driven by Haley Winslow, 18, of Franklin, collided. Vagle was a passenger in the Legacy.

The semi was traveling east on County Road 4 and failed to yield after stopping at the stop sign at an intersection, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office said. The Legacy was traveling north on County Road 1.

Wagner was transported to RC Hospital in Olivia with injuries that were not life-threatening. Winslow was transported to Carris Health-Redwood Falls and later flown to North Memorial Hospital.

Danube is about 25 miles south of Willmar.

Moose on the loose in west-central Minnesota

OLIVIA, Minn. - Not your usual trip home for lunch: That's how Susie Lang described her drive on Friday.

A bull moose bolted out in front her as she headed down an avenue on the west edge of Olivia, the city's familiar water tower and the U.S. Highway 212 commercial strip all within her eyesight.

A friend with the Renville County Sheriff's Office had texted her shortly before Lang had left for lunch. She informed Lang that that there were reports of a moose in her neighborhood just outside of town. "Seriously," she said, "that's so cool.''

Just that morning, she had been looking at a newspaper report of a motorist who had struck what was believed to be a wild elk near Hector on the east end of the county one week earlier.

Lang left for lunch about 11:30 a.m., and drove slow in hopes of spotting the moose. "Sure enough, it ran right out in front of me,'' she said.

She captured a few photos and video with her phone as the bull moose ran through a soybean field.

"He was beautiful,'' she said of the bull, adding that she hopes he finds a safe place to go.

The last she heard was that the moose was headed west towards Danube.

Moose sightings this far south of their natural range in northeastern and northwestern Minnesota are not uncommon, according to Lou Cornicelli, wildlife research manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Occasionally moose, and more often elk, will wander from their normal range, he said.

In some cases, the wanderlust is just part of the natural dispersal by younger members of a herd. In others, the travel is aberrant and caused by a brainworm. Brainworm was the cause of death for a 1½-year-old moose spotted near Sleepy Eye in 2014.

Cornicelli said it's impossible to know what brought this moose to Renville County without being able to test for disease. He just hopes no one strikes it on the road. A moose can weigh 1,000 pounds, and they stand six feet tall with a length of nine to 10 feet.

Lang is the economic development director for Renville County, and the spouse of

District 17 Sen. Andrew Lang, R-Olivia. Lang is an outdoorsman and serves on the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council, which distributes millions of dollars in funds for habitat and water quality projects.
