What I see happening in our country right now has me very worried. Not everyone is being treated equally under our laws. Our republic and democracy are under attack.

Government and citizens are required to abide by the laws. NO ONE is above the law. We are ALL entitled to due process. The law is designed to protect individuals AND our freedoms.

We have three branches of government: executive, judicial and legislative. Yet, I see individuals’ rights and due process being disregarded by the executive branch. The executive branch doesn’t have the right to override the other branches of government.

The United States of America is a republic ruled by democracy. The fundamental principle of a republic (simple version) is that the ultimate authority resides with the citizens. Our republic has a system of checks and balances where different branches of government have specific powers and responsibilities, preventing any one entity from having too much control. The power resides with the people who exercise their power through elected representatives.

Democracy is a system of government (again simple version) that protects fundamental human rights and freedom. The citizens hold the power to vote on issues, elect representatives to represent us through a voting process and other rights.

Each week, the Pioneer receives submissions from letter-writers. In hopes of easing the process and helping writers get their work published, here is a refresher on the rules regarding submissions to the Pioneer's opinion page.

We have the First Amendment right and responsibility to communicate our thoughts and opinions with our elected representatives. Our elected officials have the right to communicate those thoughts and opinions for us.

Perhaps we should ask our constitutional scholars to give Americans a civics refresher course about the function of a republic ruled by democracy.
