Shaw: Rep. Ilhan Omar has a lot to learn

FARGO -- The story of Ilhan Omar was wonderful and uplifting. She’s a refugee from Somalia, a Muslim-American, a graduate of North Dakota State University, and recently elected to Congress as a Democrat from Minnesota…

  • Too bad she’s a dangerous fraud. Omar’s latest comments accusing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee of paying American politicians to support Israel were not only anti-Israel, but also anti-Semitic and anti-American. Unfortunately, those comments hardly came as a surprise.

In 2012, Omar tweeted that Israel had “hypnotized the world” and called Israel “evil.” Shortly after she was elected, Omar gave her support to BDS, which calls for an economic boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. In other words, the destruction of Israel. However, before the election, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Omar spoke at a St. Louis Park synagogue and criticized the BDS movement. In other words, she lied.

After the election, Omar absurdly compared Israel to Iran. Perhaps Omar prefers other countries in the neighborhood with horrific human rights, such as Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Israel, even with its flaws, is the only true democracy in the Middle East and America’s best friend in the region. The Palestinians deserve their own state, but they keep walking away from great deals, probably because they don’t want to live alongside Israel.

Omar should learn from the mess in Gaza. Israel used to occupy it, but decided to leave without any pre-conditions. Instead of deciding to live peacefully, Hamas took control there, with its charter to destroy Israel. Thousands of rockets have since been fired from Gaza into Israel. It’s impossible to make peace with people like that.

Omar has apologized for her latest offensive remarks, but in light of her track record, I am not buying it.

  • Speaking of offensive, there was Rep. Rick Becker’s, R-Bismarck, disgusting Facebook post, making a joke out of male rape. Instead of taking it down, Becker incredibly used it to raise money. Kudos to Republican House Majority Leader Chet Pollert for calling the post “in very poor taste” and encouraging Becker to delete it.
  • To be fair, I need to add some information to my ago when I criticized Cass County Judge Douglas Herman for imposing a sentence of just 15 days in jail and 71 days of electronic home monitoring to attempted rapist Justin Zander. Months before that, Herman rejected a plea agreement that was even worse. Zander would have only received 7 days in jail and the crime would have been a misdemeanor. Prosecuting attorney Ryan Younggren said he reluctantly agreed to the deal because he wasn’t sure a jury would convict Zander, and to prevent a tape of Zander and the victim having consensual sex to be played in court and humiliate her. I commend Herman for rejecting the plea deal, but his final sentence was a travesty.
  • Gotta go now. It’s executive time.
