Man who died in northern Minnesota deer hunting accident ID’d

AITKIN, Minn. -- A 56-year-old man who died following a gunshot wound while deer hunting in Aitkin County in northern Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 17, has been identified as Gregory J. Nase of Columbus.

AITKIN, Minn. -- A 56-year-old man who died following a gunshot wound while deer hunting in Aitkin County in northern Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 17, has been identified as Gregory J. Nase of Columbus.

Columbus is north of the Twin Cities in far eastern Minnesota.

The man was hunting with family on family-owned land about six miles northeast of McGrath in Aitkin County.  The 911 calls were received by the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office at 12:51 p.m. on Saturday.

It was reported that the family group was hunting together making a deer “drive” for a wounded deer while others were standing.  A shot or shots were reported to have been fired at a moving deer and believed to have struck Nase, said the sheriff’s office in a report.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  Official identification is pending with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident is under investigation by the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
