BEMIDJI -- A 16-year-old student in possession of a BB gun was taken into custody at Voyageurs Expeditionary in Bemidji on Tuesday afternoon.
Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said an alert student saw the gun and reported it to school administration, who then called the police. The juvenile male was arrested at the school at approximately 2:29 p.m. and transported to the Northwestern Minnesota Juvenile Center, according to a release issued by the police department. The gun was concealed under the student’s clothing.
“He didn’t threaten anybody with it,” Mastin said. “It was really uneventful. Fortunately nobody got hurt.”
Social media speculation the event occurred at the Bemidji High prompted the police department to issue a release Wednesday morning to correct misinformation.
“We’re fine. There was no threat. That’s what we’ve go to get clear,” said Voyageurs Expeditionary Director Julie Johnson-Willborg. “We’re trying really hard here at Voyageurs to create a safe and caring community.”
Johnson-Willborg said school policy doesn’t allow any type of gun on school grounds. That’s consistent with Minnesota state law, where it is a misdemeanor to possess a BB gun on school property.
“It’s a BB pistol. It’s one step up from a toy but it’s a gun and it’s prohibited by law from being on school property,” Mastin said.
Charges have been forwarded to the Beltrami County Attorney’s Office for review. Mastin said the charge sent over from the police department was for possession of a replica or BB gun, a gross misdemeanor.
The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol assisted the Bemidji Police Department at the scene.
