DODGE CENTER, Minn. -- Authorities say a missing 7-year-old boy was found dead in a rural southeastern Minnesota pond, where he had gone swimming with friends on Tuesday afternoon, July 17.
According to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was reported missing at Naylor’s Pond, on 160th Avenue north of U.S. 14, shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Dodge Center is about 20 miles west of Rochester.
At the time of the 911 call, the boy had been missing for about 10 minutes.
Deputies, assisted by area firefighters and law enforcement officers, launched an extensive search that was assisted by helicopters from the Minnesota State Patrol and Mayo Clinic.
Around 7:40 p.m., divers from the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office located the boy’s body in a deeper part of the pond, where he was last seen by his friends.
The Olmsted County medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to confirm accidental drowning as the cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.
The victim’s name was not immediately released.
