Lake Hattie Township home deemed total loss after Wednesday fire

The fire is currently under investigation but appears to be accidental in nature. No injuries have been reported.

A Lake Hattie Township home has been deemed a total loss after a fire broke out on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, in Hubbard County.

HUBBARD COUNTY — A Lake Hattie Township home has been deemed a total loss after a fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon along 400th Street in Hubbard County.

According to a release from Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire on the 12000 block of 400th Street, roughly 20 miles south of Bemidji in Lake Hattie Township.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story house with fire and smoke showing throughout. Using a 2 1/2-inch attack line, firefighters entered a defensive mode and extinguished the fire from the exterior.

Additional crews arrived to assist with extinguishing the fire and conducting overhaul operations.

A total of 35 firefighters and 13 pieces of equipment were on the scene for approximately four hours. The home and its contents were deemed a total loss.

The fire is currently under investigation but appears to be accidental in nature, the release said. No injuries have been reported.

The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Bemidji Ambulance, Lake George Fire Department, Lakeport Fire Department, Itasca Township Fire Department, and Clearwater Polk Electric Power Company assisted the Bemidji Fire Department at the scene.

With temperatures dropping, the Bemidji Fire Department has issued a reminder to follow these heating tips to maintain a fire-safe home during the winter months:

  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from all heat sources including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters or candles.
  • Never use an oven to heat a house.
  • Turn space heaters off when leaving a room or going to bed.
  • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected each year by a professional.
