BEMIDJI — In a recent case study, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently highlighted northwest Minnesota’s approach to supporting those experiencing homelessness.

According to a release from the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, Northwest Minnesota is among six communities using the US HUD's homeless-response system approach through their Homeless Management Information Systems.

The goal of this response system is to address and end individuals’ experiences with homelessness in unique and innovative ways, according to the HUD Exchange, which manages resources and assistance to support HUD community partners.

The HUD Exchange has now posted case studies illustrating these six communities’ approaches:

  • Northwest Minnesota: Using Both Quantitative and Qualitative Data to Develop Solutions.
  • Butte County, Calif.: Data Sharing Solutions with HMIS.
  • Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio: Developing an Equity Lens to Translate HMIS Data into Action.
  • Grand Rapids, Mich.: Advancing Housing Solutions Through Coordinated Entry and Toolkit.
  • King County, Wash: Developing the King County Homelessness Data Hub
  • Santa Clara County, Calif.: Lessons Learned When Social Workers Fill Technology Gaps and Toolkit.

"(This) showcases six community case studies that include toolkits, reports and documents detailing each cohort’s accomplishments and lessons learned," said a statement on the "Communities from across the country are encouraged to explore and learn how these advanced HMIS and data efforts are helping to end homelessness."
