May 28, 2015 – Bear sightings have increased slightly this spring as dry weather has forced them into town in search of food. Most recently, a bear was seen pawing at a sliding glass door at a house near Blackduck, and the Bemidji Police Department helped escort a bear out of town after it was spotted near the Sanford Center.

25 years ago

May 28, 2000 – Nearly 50 years after he died as a Chinese prisoner of war during the Korean War, Sergeant Ernest Robinson of Cass Lake will posthumously receive the military’s Purple Heart medal during the Memorial Day powwow at the Leech Lake Veterans’ Memorial Powwow Grounds.

50 years ago

May 28, 1975 – Bemidji State College students will see a tuition increase after the State College Board approved a raise due to funding levels approved by the Legislature. A Minnesota resident with a normal undergraduate class load would pay $15 more per quarter this fall, and an extra $3.75 per quarter next year.

100 years ago

May 28, 1925 – Final deposits of the year in the school savings system were made Tuesday, and the total sum deposited during the year has reached $6,500, with a rate of four percent interest. Each teacher in the five schools has a separate envelope in which the deposits are made and taken to Northern National Bank.
