— White Earth Tribal Chairman Michael Fairbanks will face challenger Eugene “Umsy” Tibbetts in the White Earth General Election on Tuesday, June 11.
They were the top two vote-getters Tuesday out of four candidates in the White Earth Primary Election for the chairman position.

Donovan G. Burnette came in third, and Karen Marie Manypenny finished a distant fourth.
Neither Fairbanks nor Tibbetts won over 50% of the vote, which would have resulted in their direct election on Tuesday.
With all precincts reporting, the vote total was 658 votes (46.2%) for Fairbanks; 605 votes (42.5%) for Tibbetts; 140 votes (9.8%) for Burnette and 21 votes (1.4%) for Manypenny.

Fairbanks dominated in the in-person absentee vote, earning 163 votes to 68 votes for Tibbetts, 20 for Burnette and one for Manypenny.
He also won in Cass Lake, collecting 58 votes to 33 votes for Tibbetts and three for Burnette. And Fairbanks won in Minneapolis with 30 votes to 18 for Tibbetts.
Tibbetts did especially well in White Earth village, earning 139 votes to 88 votes for Fairbanks, 10 for Burnette and three for Manypenny.
Naytahwaush was won by Burnette, who earned 83 votes to 70 votes for Tibbetts and 68 votes for Fairbanks.

Of the larger precincts, Tibbetts won in Ogema, Waubun, and (by one vote) Callaway. Fairbanks won in Rice Lake, Mahnomen and Pine Point.
Tibbetts also won 12 of the 13 votes cast in Marble, while he and Fairbanks tied in Pine Bend with 7 votes each.
In the absentee ballot vote, which came in late after a hand-count because of computer problems, Tibbetts won 86 votes to 65 for Fairbanks, three for Burnette and seven for Manypenny.
