Buena Vista Ski Area holds 75th Anniversary Celebration

Buena Vista Ski Area rounded out its 75th season with a special ribbon cutting and program on Saturday.

BEMIDJI — Buena Vista Ski Area rounded out its 75th season with a special ribbon cutting and program on Saturday.

Mayor Jorge Prince and Bemidji Chamber President Scott Turn were on hand to on Julia Vista. A downhill ski procession was led by members of Buena Vista Ski Patrol carrying the American flag, with the Thomas family members following suit in honoring the 75th celebration.

"Muffy Dickinson, the chalet's well-known piano player and part of the original generation of Buena Vista, was able to 'ski' down for the event as well with a little help," a release said. "As many people gathered around the hillside of the chalet, the ribbon was cut by owner Suzanne Thomas to not only commemorate the past 75 years but to also look ahead to the future."

A special celebration on Feb. 22 preceded Saturday's event, which included a program emceed by Todd Haugen. Guest speakers included owner Suzanne Thomas and other family members, along with longtime friend and colleague Wendell Knutson, Ski Patroller Shannon Miller, rental shop technician Mike Huerbin and LeRoy Stenstrom.

"The program featured the rich history of the ski area, special events throughout the years, future plans for the ski area and most importantly special winter memories that have captivated winter enthusiasts for generations," the release said. "We celebrated the dedication of everyone who has worked so hard to make Buena Vista what it is today: the staff, ski patrollers, and the countless individuals who have contributed to its success over the years. The passion, hard work, and commitment from these individuals have ensured that Buena Vista continues to thrive."

Some future plans for the ski area will be hill expansion on the backside, adding another tow rope for a unique terrain feature hill, expanding the tubing park and adding more summer events.

This weekend's festivities concluded the winter season at the ski area due to continuing warm temperatures.
