BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Fire Department responded to the report of a cell phone on fire at an apartment on Wednesday, Feb. 19, along First Street in Bemidji.
According to a release from Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood, at 8:22 a.m. on Wednesday, firefighters responded to a report of a cell phone on fire in an apartment located along First Street East in Bemidji.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-story residential structure with nothing showing from the exterior. As firefighters investigated, they located the caller who stated that his cell phone battery was hissing and then rapidly began burning.
Due to the intensity of the fire, he dropped the cell phone on the carpeted floor, kicked it into the kitchen and extinguished the fire with two extinguishers, the release said. One minor injury was reported.
The Bemidji Fire Department responded with two firefighters and one apparatus. The fire is under investigation but believed to be accidental.
"While this fire was not major, it had the potential," the release said. "Lithium-ion batteries are dangerous as this fire highlights those dangers."
