Investigation showed that Peters had taken a 10-year-old out deer hunting during the youth hunting season that morning. After returning to the truck, Peters instructed the youth to unload the rifle. While trying to unload the bolt-action Ruger .270 caliber rifle, the youth squeezed the trigger while Peters was standing in the line of fire, the release said.

The bullet struck Peters and went through both buttocks, according to the release. He was transported by Bemidji Ambulance to the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center and was then airlifted to a Fargo hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries.
