TEN LAKES TOWNSHIP -- Beltrami County deputies are investigating a suspicious letter sent to a candidate for Leech Lake Tribal Council.
According to a news release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Donald Finn, 71, of Cass Lake, reported Monday that he had received suspicious mail containing a threatening message and some powder.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Minnesota Chemical Assessment Team responded and took custody of the mail. It was sent to the Minnesota Department of Health for analysis.
A family member of Finn’s provided the Pioneer with a photo of the message, which said “Dead Men Can’t Talk,” followed by an expletive.
Finn, who is running for the position of secretary/treasurer against incumbent Arthur “Archie” LaRose, as well as candidates Steven Howard and Arlen Wakefield, told investigators that he thinks the threat is related to his candidacy.
Finn appealed LaRose’s certification as a candidate in January, though the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe’s Tribal Election Court of Appeals denied Finn’s appeal Feb. 7.
