MOORHEAD - Republican Dave Hughes formally filed for candidacy a week after receiving the GOP's endorsement to oust incumbent DFLer Collin Peterson in a congressional rematch.

Dave Hughes announced Tuesday, May 29, that he will once again run against Peterson, which he also did during a close 2016 race when the Democrat retained his seat for a 14th term with 52 percent of the vote to Hughes' 47 percent.

Peterson, of Detroit Lakes and a Glyndon native, represents a large swath of western Minn. - 38 counties in total - and was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. Hughes is a retired Air Force officer from Karlstad who trains U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency pilots.

In a Tuesday news release, Hughes said he won his party's endorsement May 19 at a GOP convention in Ottertail while flanked by his wife, Amanda, and seven children.

"I'm running for office so that my children, and yours, can enjoy a brighter future," Hughes said in a written statement.

Minnesota's primary election is Aug. 14.
