Bemidji blood drive brings in 58 volunteers

Trek North's Service Learning Program hosted a blood drive with Vitalant, formerly United Blood Services, on Monday, March 4, at Calvary Lutheran Church, which helped collect a total of 57 units of blood for patients in need.

Trek North's Service Learning Program hosted a blood drive with Vitalant, formerly United Blood Services, on Monday, March 4, at Calvary Lutheran Church, which helped collect a total of 57 units of blood for patients in need.

A total of 58 individuals volunteered to donate blood and 50 individuals were able to donate at the blood drive, a release said. A total of eight donors also came forward to donate Power Red Cells (2RBC), which collects two units of red blood cells while returning platelets, plasma and a saline solution back to the donor. There were five people who volunteered for the first time.

Vitalant thanked Shelby Dukek, who coordinated the drive, and Trek North's Service Learning Program for sponsoring the blood drive and Calvary Lutheran Church for providing the space.

Vitalant strives to keep a 5-day supply of every blood type on the shelf at all times to be able to meet the needs of patients across the region, a release said
