The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that 18-year-old Ammar AboEl-Nago sank while swimming to a floating dock at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was a foreign exchange student from Egypt studying at Oberlin College in Ohio, according to the sheriff’s office.

Witnesses told authorities on Tuesday that he first swam out to the floating dock and back to shore while wearing a life vest, and felt confident that he could make it to the floating dock again without a life vest. He sank into the lake as he reached the floating dock and was recovered by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad about 30 minutes later.
