BEMIDJI -- Hundreds of students and other well-wishers packed the Lincoln Elementary gym Wednesday for a Veterans Day program there. Across town less than an hour later, Northern Elementary students and staff did likewise.
Students at Lincoln hosted a breakfast and sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and a musical rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance. An honor guard presented flags, and a pair of women from the Headwaters Quilt Guild presented two veterans with specially made quilts, which they draped over their shoulders.

“Veterans Day isn’t just a day for veterans -- it’s a day for all Americans,” Sgt. First Class Samuel Brown said at the assembly. “It’s a day to remember why they were fighting and a day for all of us to begin our journey of protecting our freedom and the freedom of many future generations.”

Students there also presented cards, flowers, and a hug to each of the 71 vets in attendance.
At Northern, each grade sang standards such as “Yankee Doodle” or “This Land is Your Land” to the similar assembly emceed by Brian Ophus, an Iraq veteran who works at Beltrami County’s Health and Human Services Department. And a class of fourth-graders there recited poems, as well.
Northern students also made cards to give to the 80-something veterans in attendance and put patriotic door hangers all over the school. Their assembly also featured an honor guard.
Headwaters Quilt Guild members presented another pair of vets with ceremonial quilts at Northern, too.
While Veterans Day is Saturday, two more Veterans Day recognition ceremonies are scheduled for Monday morning. One at Paul Bunyan Elementary and another at Bemidji High .
