The Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning will present Chuck Johnson’s one-man play “The Night Before Gettysburg” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Event Room in Park Rapids.

The original, one-act play is a historically accurate reconstruction of Nov. 18, 1863 – the day before Abraham Lincoln is to give “a few appropriate remarks” at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

It’s bedtime, and the speech isn’t done. It’s been a bone-wearying day that began in Washington, D.C., and ended in Gettysburg, Pa. As Lincoln works on his speech, racism, slavery, war carnage and the deaths of two of his children tear at his soul.

As Lincoln asks himself “What is slavery? Why is slavery?” and answers those questions, you will see the man Lincoln was, what he stood for and the burdens he carried as he worked hard to reunite America.

The program is open to the public, free of charge and handicap accessible.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
