CASS LAKE -- Summer naturalist programs at Chippewa National Forest this week include hikes to the Joyce Estate near Marcell and the Lost Forty.
On Monday, July 17, at 10 a.m., visitors can join naturalist Steve Gang for a hike to the historic Joyce Estate. Participants will meet at the Edge of the Wilderness Discovery Center in Marcell, Minn., and then drive in a car caravan (following the naturalist vehicle) to the trailhead on the north end of Trout Lake. Plan on a three-four hour tour that includes a 1.5-mile hike in to the Joyce Estate. Please note the hike is three miles. Bring along a sack lunch and have a picnic with the naturalist.

On Tuesday, July 18, at 10 a.m., join Gang and fellow naturalist Sophie Buysse will lead a hike into the Lost Forty. Participants will meet at the Cut Foot Sioux Visitor Center off Highway 46, 17 miles north of Deer River and drive in a car caravan to the Lost 40 trailhead. This 1.5 mile hike meanders through the towering old growth pines and along Moose Creek.
For both hikes, visitors should bring hiking boots, hat, water bottle and bug spray along with a lunch or snacks. For more information, call (218) 335-8600.
