"His words and teachings not only impacted the Native population, but people from all walks of life," added the release. "He inspired thousands with his teachings about living in harmony, not only with each other, but also with nature."

Meuers worked in public relations for Red Lake Nation for more than 20 years, and during this time he spearheaded the Ojibwe language project in Bemidji.

This project was recently recognized by National Geographic for "support in sustaining and enhancing the unique geographic character of the region," the release said.

Our newsroom sometimes reports stories under the byline "Pioneer Staff Report." This byline is used when reporters rewrite basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as an email or press release that requires little or no reporting.

Other times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
