BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host Minnesota author Karen Babine at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW in Bemidji.

Babine will discuss her book "The Allure of Elsewhere."

In "The Allure of Elsewhere," Babine, accompanied by her two cats, Galway and Maeve, takes a journey in her Scamp camper from her home in Minnesota to Nova Scotia to explore the place and the stories of where her French-Acadian ancestors settled, a release said.

"Capturing the joy, freedom, and powerful pull of the open road, "The Allure of Elsewhere" is about the stories we're told, the stories we tell, and the way those stories make us who we are, often in surprising ways," a release said. "Intimate, curious, and candid, written with wry wit and warmth, this is a courageous and inspiring memoir."

BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host author and journalist Mary Annette Pember at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW, in Bemidji.

Pember will discuss her book "Medicine River - A Story of Survival and the Legacy of Indian Boarding ��s."

The book offers a sweeping and trenchant exploration of the history of Native American boarding schools in the U.S., and the legacy of abuse wrought by systemic attempts to use education as a tool through which to destroy Native culture, a release said.

“In 'Medicine River,' we can see pain ripple through generations, eclipsed only by Mary Annette Pember's courage and her conviction that, in the search for answers, we can heal," Anton Treuer, author of Where Wolves Don't Die, said in the release.

Pember is an independent journalist focusing on Native American issues. She has reported on the high rates of sexual assault experienced by Native women, sex trafficking, health, the impact of historical trauma on Native communities and environmental challenges on Native lands, federal policy issues and cultural topics.

Her work has appeared in Indian Country Today, ReWire News, Truthout, Yes! Magazine, the Guardian, the Washington Post, Colorlines, The Atlantic and others. She is past president of the Native American Journalists’ Association and is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host Red Lake Nation member Dennis E. Staples, in discussion with author Justin Holley, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.

At the event, Staples will hold a book signing for his newest mystery, "Passing Through a Prairie Country." The book is "a darkly humorous thriller about the ghosts that haunt the temples of excess we call casinos, and the people caught in their high-stakes, low-odds web," a release said.

"Taking readers on a journey through the lavish Hidden Atlantis Casino, where no clocks hang on the walls, to the timeless realm of mysterious and death-dealing spirits, Dennis E. BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host Minnesota author William Kent Krueger at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.

Krueger is a NYT Bestselling author of the Cork O'Connor series. His most recent works include "The River We Remember" and "Fox Creek." His newest mystery is "Spirit Crossing: Cork O'Connor Mystery #20."

In "Spirit Crossing," Cork's grandson discovers the shallow grave of an Ojibwe woman in the hunt for a local politician's missing daughter. As a connection between the missing teenager and the Ojibwe woman is found, a realization is formed that Cork’s grandson may be the next victim, a release said.

Treuer will sign copies of his newest young adult thriller, "Where Wolves Don’t Die."

"Where Wolves Don't Die" follows Ojibwe boy Ezra Cloud as he gets into a terrible fight with the neighborhood bully, Matt Schroeder. When Matt’s house burns down, Ezra becomes the prime suspect. Innocent, Ezra’s family sends him to Canada to stay with his grandfather, yet the Schroeders are looking for him.

Goldman's newest thriller, "Still Waters," is set in Leech Lake, Minn. The book follows two estranged siblings who come back to their family-run resort. BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host Minnesota authors Jess Lourey, Kristi Belcamino and Sarah Stonich at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.

The three authors will discuss books, writing and more. Attendees can participate in a question-and-answer session with the authors and a book signing.

Lourey's newly revised novel, "May Day," tells the story of a waitress turned librarian turned investigator after she finds her new lover murdered, a release said.

"'May Day' is a laugh-out-loud cozy mystery set in Battle Lake, Minn.," Four Pines employee Rachel Harris said in the release. "It is the perfect read to kick off the summer."

Lourey is a bestselling author who writes about small-town secrets. She has won and been nominated for various awards.

Four Pines Bookstore to host Independent Bookstore Day celebration April 27

BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will hold a celebration for the 11th annual Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 27, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.

Four Pines will celebrate the event with giveaways and sales happening all day. A free children's story time highlighting Richard Scarry's books will take place at 10 a.m. A handful of local authors will also be at the store from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a release said.

"Independent Bookstore Day is one of our favorite days," Four Pines owner Gina Grinde said in the release. "It both celebrates the bookseller and the book buyer. We are so excited to have participated for the last two years and look forward to many more."

Independent Bookstore Day was established in 2013 to promote, celebrate and highlight the value of the independent bookstore community. The day has been observed on the last Saturday of April every year since 2013. This year, more than 900 stores are participating across the country, the release said.

Independent Bookstore Day is organized by the American Booksellers Association, a national not-for-profit trade organization that works with booksellers and industry partners to ensure the success and profitability of independently owned book retailers.
